Today I learned that Cleo would rather have me pick mats out of her fur with my fingernails than snip the mats off with scissors. I guess it makes sense because the fingernails feel more natural to her... more like how she nips at mats with her teeth to try to get them out.

Anyway, if I use the scissors, she gets upset and leaves. If I try to work the mats out with my fingers, she'll sit there patiently for as long as it takes. Poor Cleo! I wish I'd learned this sooner... like before I'd subjected her to seven years of scissors.

Two years later...

REMEMBER

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

So, remember a while back I got a mylar tassel for the fishing pole toy and then Paddy started eating pieces of the tassel? I ended up getting a nylon tassel at Petco, so the kids could play without the risk of technicolor barfs.

Well, yesterday I noticed that the cats didn't seem very interested in their toys and it occurred to me to put the feathers back on the fishing pole. I think the cats had forgotten all about those feathers. Cleo chased it so long this evening that she had to take a snack break in the middle of playing. Usually Paddy hogs the toys, but he's not feeling well lately, so Cleo is getting lots of play time. It's nice to see because she is a really fun cat.

Cleo just ripped a hole in one of the kitty cruisers. It's still usable. I was just surprised to see a paw poke out one of the seams.

Paddy has been running around like a maniac since about 5 this morning. Sometimes he is able to get Cleo to join him, but other times she is far too sophisticated for that. It must be something in the air because the cat in the upstairs apartment is running around too. I've never heard that before. It's funny to see my cats staring at the ceiling like, "OMGZ... strange kittehs in the ceiling!"

What Big Cat Are You?

I stole this from one of my human friends. I think all the kitties should try it because I want to see what results you get...

You Are a White Tiger
You have a strong individualistic streak. You are unique and outspoken.
You have firm ideas of right and wrong. You will stand up for your unpopular beliefs with pride.

You believe that learning the truth is important. Even if it's ugly, uncomfortable, or awkward.
You give it to people straight, and you expect them to do the same. You can't stand ambiguity of any kind.

Cleo has been looking a little scruffy lately, so I decided that it was time for a grooming session. She was excited about it. That's not really a good thing because an excited Cleo is a whirling dervish Cleo. It's like she can't decide where she wants to be combed first, so she just scampers around and around, trying to give me different parts of herself.

Well, anyway... I got her all combed out and looking lovely. When I was done, she gave a little shake to fluff up her fur. (I love it when she does that.) Then she jumped off the couch, flopped herself on the floor, and rolled around in her sunbeam. When she stood up, she had that all-over bed-head look and you would never guess that she had ever in her life been groomed.

Bill of Rights for Pets

We have the right to be full members of your family. We thrive on social interaction, praise, and love.

We have the right to stimulation. We need new games, new toys, new experiences, and new smells to be happy.

We have the right to regular exercise. Without it, we could become hyper, sluggish...or fat.

We have the right to have fun. We enjoy acting like clowns now and then; don't expect us to be predictable all the time.

We have the right to quality health care. Please stay good friends with our vet.

We have the right to a good diet. Like some people, we don't know what's best for us. We depend on you.

We have the right not to be rejected because of your expectations that we be great show dogs or show cats, watchdogs, hunters, or baby-sitters.

We have the right to receive proper training. Otherwise, our good relationship could be marred by confusion and strife - and we could become dangerous to ourselves and others.

We have the right to guidance and correction based on understanding and compassion, rather than abuse.

We have the right to live with dignity...and to die with dignity when the time comes.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
and pain does keep me from my sleep,
then will you do what must be done
for this , the last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
But don't let grief then stay your hand.
For, on this day, more than the rest,
your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years.
You wouldn't want me to suffer, so
when the time comes, please let me go.
Take me to where my needs they'll tend.
Only, stay with me 'til the end,
and hold me firm and speak to me
until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
it is a kindness you do for me.
Although my tail it's last has waved,
from pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must now be you
who has to decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years -
don't let your heart hold any tears.

Remembering a brave kitty

Do you kitties remember Scarlett the Cat, who rescued her five kittens from a burning building in New York in 1996? We learned today that she passed to the Rainbow Bridge recently. We would like to invite all our friends to join us in a candle ceremony tomorrow evening (10 PM eastern, 7 PM pacific) for Scarlett and all our other friends who have moved on from this world.

This is cool!

I think everyone should do this, especially my aunt [livejournal.com profile] alannahjoy because she has some very unusual interests.

So, therealcleo, your LiveJournal reveals...

You are weirder than 37% of other LJers.)

Find out what your weirdness level is!

I like that it said I'm not herd-like. Well, duh.... I'm a cat!

Tomorrow is the day that we celebrate as my barfday. I'm going to be six years old. Doesn't time just fly? Mom says it does. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I'm looking for gifts and barfday wishes and stuff like that...

Are you and your human compatible?

Here is a quiz to see if you and your human are compatible. It said that the patio cat is only "good friends" with Mom, but I am her "best friend". Mom said, "yeah, but I still like Alex best." That's okay; I'm still her best friend now.
