A company called Menu Foods produces some of the ingredients in a lot of popular pet foods. They have just announced that some of their batches were contaminated and at least 10 animals have died because of it. Many others have become sick with vomiting and/or kidney failure after eating these foods.

They are still trying to figure out what is going on and facts are a little hard to come by. Here are some things that I do know.

They have not yet released all the brands or lot numbers that will be affected by the recall. However, in response to this problem, Iams and Eukanuba are recalling some 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet foods with the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197.

The food was sold in many stores, including Kroger, Safeway, Wal-Mart and PetSmart between early December 2006 and early March 2007. I don't think those are the only stores and I don't think Iams and Eukanuba are the only brands. Maybe the safest thing is to just eat kibble and avoid wet food until we find out more about this problem.

More information about the recall will be released soon and I will write another blog when I learn more. In the meantime, here is a website that will provide more information directly from the company. Here is a news story about the recall.
